Luxury hotels in Italy are defined by various, definite factors, quality being the most important of these. Attention to detail, service, individual décor and quality furnishings are a close second. A true luxury hotel will offer its guests a tranquil environment of opulent luxury whilst pampering its guests with a range of services and amenities that makes for an unforgettable visit.

What defines luxury for one person may not be the same to another, so a good cross section of quality amenities and services are needed to match all expectations. Seclusion and privacy are amongst the chief aspects of a luxury experience. Luxury hotels in Italy offer a varied range of secluded locations that can offer a wide range of luxury services.

Exclusivity is another key feature of most luxury hotels Italy. Original décor, exquisite artwork, such period features as chandeliers and stylish antique furnishings all add to an air of opulence and luxury. The alternative is an establishment that offers a modern, minimalistic, yet original approach to décor by employing talented architects and designers to create a uniquely individual setting.

Luxury is defined by space as well as content. Combine the finest Egyptian cotton with hand crafted furnishings and such tactile materials as marble, crystal, stone and wood in a pleasing combination of colours and textures. Add to this such modern amenities as iPod docking stations, state-of-the art surround sound stereo systems, multi-line cordless telephone facilities with voicemail facilities and high-speed Internet access.

The height of luxury is a soak in scented oils in a marble spa bath or private Jacuzzi whilst enjoying a glass of chilled champagne and listening to your favourite music in tranquil surroundings. Move on to a visit from a professional masseuse in the privacy of your rooms. Enjoy a world-class breakfast whilst ensconced in a comfortable robe with views overlooking a private garden setting and you have the makings of a perfect morning.

Luxury hotels in Italy are also known for the finest service in the world. Staff are available to see to your every whim and will even arrange business and social functions to cater to your every need, whether planning a lavish cocktail party of an International business conference.

Due to the sheer number of hotels available in the area, finding the ideal business conference will require you to narrow down exactly what is important to you in such a venue. There are a number of important considerations you will need to keep in mind when you are deciding where to lay your head for the night. The location of the hotel, size of the conference rooms, and the type of accommodations are three of the most common criteria, for finding the perfect location for your next business conference.

If you are not from the Paris area, or if many of the attendees of the conference are not from the area, it can be beneficial to ensure that the location of the hotel is easy to locate. You will find a number of hotels that are available on hoteldealsparis.co.uk close to the two largest airports which serve the city. Orly, which is located south of the city, and Roissy/Charles de Gaulle, which is located north of the city, provide a wide range of convenient flights into the city as well as prime hotel locations nearby.

Knowing the number of attendees for the business conference will make an important difference when you looking for a business conference hotel in Paris. While many hotels offer both a larger and a smaller size conference room, many specialize in one size. A conference room that is large can be more easily tailored to meet your needs, even if your group is small, however.

The accommodations that you will need in order for your conference to run smoothly is a criteria whose importance can not be overlooked. Most of the business conference rooms located in hotels have access to audio-visual equipment and wireless internet, as well as an ample amount of chairs and tables of various sizes. If you need special lighting, such as natural light, however, you will need to be sure to note that when you are conducting your search. It is also important to be aware of any special accommodations that might be needed by your attendees such as closed captioning or access for a wheelchair.

When is the last time you took a vacation? Chances are, you may not even remember and that you are long overdue for a getaway. Sure, it’s sometimes easier said than done, but if you are determined to finally take break from it all, then you simply pick a place, book your trip, packyour bags, and leave.

Given all the pretty possibilities on this planet to spend your holiday, it can be somewhat difficult to make a suitable selection. But once you know what you are looking for whether it be rest and relaxation, action and adventure, or a little bit of both, then you are ready to explore your options.

Bahrain – a truly fantastic holiday destination and western friendly compared to other arabian destinations. Bahrain is steeped in history going back 5000 years in the form of three forts that are open to visitors. Why not go and see the grand prix or play golf on their many beautiful courses.

Hawaii – A regular on the list of best places to visit, this heavenly haven offers many of the things that are expected of an ideal vacation. The abundant sunshine, comfortable accommodations, and endless activities are sure to please anyone, of any age. Made up of 8 islands in all, seven of which are inhabited,Hawaii still remains an unspoiled gem that must be seen to believe.

Paris – The romance capital of the world is not just for lovers, in fact, more and more families are recently starting to visit the City ofLights to find out what the fuss is all about. This mega metropolis, which actually was once the largest city in the entire world, has managed to implement modern technology without disturbing its magnificent history.

Prague – The picturesque Czech capital is famous for its resilient past and proudly polite people. In addition, urban scenery does not really get much better than this, and with its extensive system of public transportation, you don’t even need to rent a car when visiting the unique and inviting city.

Montreal – Consistently ranked as one of the worlds most liveable cities, it is also one of the most visited in Canada. With a balanced blend of Euro charm and North American flare, many people go there for the top notch cuisine and energetic nightlife.

Disney World – Of course, we have to include the place where everybody gets to be a kid again! This hot spot in central Florida has so much to see and do that you may find yourself planning your next trip there during your first trip there. With numerous theme parks, sparkling hotels, and diverse restaurants, you will need at least a week to do Disney.

A viable alternative to a holiday tan, that is now becoming popular around the world is the cosmetic and effective tanning treatment from Europatan using melanotan and Melanotan II tanning injections. It’s a great way to get that bronzed look without the sunburn and harmful rays.

United Arab Emirates

Part of the Arabian Peninsula, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is a federation of seven states (known as emirates) formed in 1971 after independence from Britain. Today, the UAE carries the reputation of being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, fuelled by its monopoly on oil exportation. However, it hasn’t always been this way – before oil was discovered in the region in the 1950s, the economic situation was in decline. Oil was to change the face of the UAE forever.

Now, the UAE is booming and flaunts its ostentatious persona with pride. Everything about the place breathes wealth and decadence and life is enjoyed to excess by those resident and those visiting. This is not a place for retiring wallflowers, this is the place to be if you revel in hedonism and enjoy the best that money can buy. There may be a tough work ethic in existence but the rewards are substantial, with the oil wealth and diversification into other economic activity creating a very high standard of living. Strolling through the phenomenal malls on a weekend would have you believing that you have stumbled upon a red carpet parade as men and women alike flaunt designer labels and outfits that are better suited to a movie premiere than a casual day’s shopping. This is part of the thrill of visiting the wealthier parts of the UAE – you are transported to a world you normally only see in movies. You may feel like an extra, but it’s a fun eye opener and you can quickly become star struck by the glamour of it all.

The major cities of the UAE seem to open up before your eyes with shimmering skyscraper after skyscraper reaching for the sky and catching the sunlight in a way that makes them seem as though they too are dripping in extravagant gems. You can stay in hotels of jaw dropping opulence and resorts fit for an emperor (and costing a princely sum too!) where nothing is too much trouble and a specially concocted sun downer arrives faster than the sheikh of a lamb’s tail!

However, the UAE is not all bling and no substance, there is a traditional side to the country that is in stark contrast. You will be woken by the early morning prayer songs carried melodically along on the dawn breezes, you will be captivated by the throngs of women in their burkhas with dark mystical eyes peering at you from beneath, you will sigh at the sight of crumbling forts and fall deeply in love with a night in the desert under the stars. Nomadic Bedouins exist alongside the Western consumers, though they are unlikely to cross paths all too often.

Meander through the souks and you will be treated to all manner of curious and fascinating artefacts, food, jewellery and anything else you could possibly conjure up in your imagination. Here you will find comfortable but tiny shops dripping with gold jewellery, only to walk around the corner to stumble upon stall after battered stall barely standing from the weight of the mountain of fish or spices resting atop.

The very essence and charm of the modern day United Arab Emirates is about the juxtaposition of the flash, brash and glitzy sitting very comfortably alongside the unforgettable custom, ancient aspects and colourful local hospitality. The oil industry has brought with it an influx of foreign workers over the years who, together with expats, now make up more than 75% of the population. This melting pot of cultures and beliefs only adds to the contrast and appeal of the region and the UAE is considered to be the most liberal of the countries in the Gulf.

There is so much to discover in this extraordinary country that is quite unlike any other.

10 reasons to visit the UAE

There are so many reasons to visit this part of the world that it is difficult to single out 10, however the following experiences are highlights that should not be missed.

1. Dune Bashing

The quirky name given to the art of driving across desert dunes at break neck speeds, providing more thrills and spills than your average rollercoaster! Also affectionately known as sand-surfing, highly experienced drivers (or so they say) take you out in a 4×4 for an exhilarating drive across the sands at a rate of knots, down the high dunes at gradients that will have you bouncing around happily in the back wondering whether you should perhaps have taken the camel ride option! This is adrenalin pumping fun at its best!! Available pretty much anywhere in the UAE where there is desert!

2. Mystical souks

Visiting the Arabian souks is an absolute must – it would be criminal to come to the UAE and not have your best go at bartering for Arabian slippers, or spices, or gold, or fish, or indeed anything you fancy…..even a camel! The souks are both chaotic and enchanting, often a maze of alleyways and a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of goodies. You’ll soon by bewitched by the colours and smells and sights and you’ll just want to keep coming back for more. If you’re not on a budget, the gold souks will have you both mesmerized and salivating.

3. Al Ain’s Camel Farm

So you thought camels were put there just for the tourists? But no! Camels are an integral part of Arabia and not only as reliable desert transport (they’re not called ships of the desert for nothing), but also as a sport in themselves. See for yourself with a trip to Al Ain’s Camel Farm at which you will see camel race tracks. Make sure you time your visit for a race meeting so you can see these long legged animals in action and with speeds of up to 40mph, prepare to be amazed!

4. Hot Air Ballooning

What better way to appreciate the dazzling skyline of Dubai and the crests and waves of the desert dune formations than to take a trip skywards in a hot air balloon? The romance of it all seems ever more so when you are soaring high above it all in a cloudless sky.

5. Burj Al Arab

Cue, the world’s most exclusive hotel: If your flexible friend doesn’t stretch to spending a night at the Burj Al Arab, then blag, flatter or trick your way into the world’s only 7 star hotel (although not for long as there are a couple of competing hotels under construction). The hotel was designed to resemble a billowing sail and it presides over the Dubai coastline with a certain majesty. Showcasing sumptuous furnishings and fittings, the rooms are worthy of a place on the cover of a glossy interiors magazine and there is as much gold and marble as you would expect to find in an emperor’s palace – the Burj Al Arab is opulence out of this world. Access to the hotel is for guests only, but if you fancy splashing out on high tea fit for a queen then, providing you are dressed smartly (think no to the travelling sandals and backpack), you can access parts of the hotel reserved for lounge guests. It may come at a price but think of all the tales you’ll have to take back home.

6. Tradtional Dhow Cruise

Romance the loved one in your life or merely treat yourself to some spectacular views of the city by embarking on a sunset dinner cruise in a traditional authentic wooden Dhow boat. The boat slowly traverses the river whilst you sip cocktails and watch the sun set in a shimmering haze over the glass fronted high rise buildings.

7. Al Bidyah Mosque

The oldest mosque in the UAE, dating back to 1446. This is one of the only mosques open to non-muslims and is well worth a visit. Surrounded by palm groves with views of the Indian Ocean from the watch tower, the setting is spectacular.

8. Shopping in Dubai

Of the throngs of tourists that visit Dubai each year, many have only one thing on their mind – shopping! Their reason is justified too as Dubai is a shopping mecca and duty free haven for designer goods and jewellery. The mega malls have to be seen to be believed and shopping there should come with a health warning as the temptation is so much that yes, you could literally shop until you drop!

9. A visit to a Bedouin Desert Camp

A trip to the UAE wouldn’t be complete without experiencing an authentic Bedouin camp beneath starry skies in the desert. Depending on your preference you can find a secluded, private and very romantic camp or you can join a small group out to party alongside the gyrating belly dancers. Either way, falling asleep to the sound of distant drums, with a belly full of delicious Arabian cuisine and only the star lit sky and night breezes for company takes a lot of beating.

10. Taking an Abra ride

Whilst the authentic Dhow boats might cost you, the abras (water taxis) afford you the same views for a fraction of the price, normally only a few dirham. So grab a beer, get down to the waterfront to board an abra and devise a sunset cruise all of your own and on a ridiculously cheap budget to boot! You get to mingle with the locals, all part of a travel adventure and once you’ve taken one ride, you’ll be hooked and it could very well become the transport of choice during your stay!

Getting to and around the UAE

The main international airports servicing the UAE are in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and these 2 states are where the majority of visitors head for. However, Sharjah also receives international passengers too, as does Ras al-Khajmah, Fujairah and Al-Ain, creating an alternative base to begin your trip if you prefer to travel a little off the beaten track.

There are daily bus services between Dubai and Muscat in Oman. Similarly a daily bus services the route between Abu Dhabi and Muscat.

Getting around within the UAE itself is relatively straightforward as there are regular buses running between every combination of the seven emirates.
To appreciate the full scope and character of the country however there is no substitute for hiring a car. The roads are in excellent condition and generally safe apart from the odd wondering camel! Driving in the cities themselves however can be chaotic and extra care is required.

Morocco

Crammed into the back of a battered old Mercedes cab coated in a fine film of red dust, speeding through palm lined boulevards, the driver swinging from lane to lane, narrowly avoiding a moped carrying a man, his wife and 2 small children. Does anyone stop at intersections? And yet somehow there is a sense that this is organised chaos. Speed limits are for dodos, everyone knows it is in the hands of Allah to get you to your destination safely so why worry….

Then a glimpse of the Medina walls, fortified, proud and important, holding a mysterious and captivating city beyond. Like the veil covering a Muslim woman’s face, from which deep kohl lined eyes appear mesmerizingly, holding the key to the soul. The medina walls, interspersed by gates known as Babs, are likewise the key to the soul of the ancient city.

This sight is familiar in all of the larger Moroccan cities – Marrakech, Fes, Rabat – and many of the smaller ones too, each with their own unique character waiting to be discovered.

Bags dropped, late afternoon and the heat is still high, the souks beckon with promise of respite from the sun. Covered over intermittently with remnants of cloth that let in the last of the sun’s rays casting weird and wonderful patterns across people’s faces as they pass. Here’s a purveyor of fine perfumes set out alongside tiny delicate glass and silver bottles. Another selling an astonishing array of aromatic spices piled high in wonderful conical displays. A child is fixated by a wall of slippers, traditional Moroccan babouches made of the softest leather hand stitched and temptingly arranged in every colour imaginable. Oh and the smell! Sugary mint tea sipped by souk vendors as they idly chat eyeing passers-by for the prospect of a sale. Sweet smelling and enticing, the fresh mint adds a welcome layer of scent to mask the odour of a busy city in full swing. Cats and kittens everywhere, weaving in and out of your feet, there’s one curled asleep on the weighing scales, another playfully chasing the fringed tassels of the myriad kilim rugs hanging decoratively off the side of a wall. All the while vendors play their theatrical acts with great expression and good spirit – “Today half price, but only today” “You are first customer, so I give for you good price as bring me luck, first sale of the day always bring luck” “You buy slippers, you give 20 families enough to eat today”. And so the fun begins!

So what is the essence of Morocco? The people perhaps, their sun wizened faces and earthiness lending a humility and ancient wisdom, a welcoming embrace to those who scratch the surface. The maze of narrow alleyways haphazardly crossing cities that have stood still with time. The meticulously timed, beautifully haunting prayer calls ululating on the breeze, conveying the importance of the faith that underlies Morocco’s rhythm of life.

It may be a cliché but Morocco IS one of those rare places that touches the soul and stirs the senses. Just as it has done throughout its colourful history, just as it will continue to do so for years to come. And what’s more, in this current political climate, it’s one of the safest Arabian countries in which to travel.

What to do in Morocco

Cities, beaches, mountains, desert – visitors are spoilt for choice. The following is just a tiny introduction to a country with so much on offer.

Marrakech

The heart of Morocco and it is sure to win your heart too. The contrast between the ‘Ville Nouvelle’ and the old city is a gentle transformation, Marrakech is what Morocco is all about. Vivid colour, smells, noise and street scenes that could have been lifted from the pages of a glossy coffee table book play on before your very eyes. Men and women in traditional long hooded robes called Djellabahs pass through narrow streets, jostling their way alongside heavy laden mules carefully picking a path through the crowds. Huge wooden doors brightly painted in jewelled hues, adorned with elaborate locks and bolts and embellished with silver door knockers in the shape of the hand of Fatima.

Rugs and cushions and Moroccan pouffes and also sorts of interior goodies line the souk shops, tempting casual passers-by who only meant to browse but couldn’t resist.

The sweetest pastries on offer, tiny, delicate, gone in a mouthful until you reach for another and another.

All roads eventually lead to a square, the hub of activity. The piece de resistance is Place Djemaa el Fna – the main square of Marrakech, alive at any hour of day but awakened to its full potential after dusk. This square has to be seen to be believed. At first the noise is deafening, the crowds overbearing and yet there is something so appealing and you will be drawn like a magnet night after night. Rows of food stalls offering tagines and sheesh kebabs sizzling hot on the grill as you wait, their cumulative smoke spirals rising high in the air and lingering over the crowds. The place is magical, a story tale or fantasy that stimulates the senses into overdrive. Look on as crowds gather around a flute player enticing a cobra from its sleep. Music fills the air, drums beating methodically ever louder as dancers spin like whirling dervishes faster and faster in a trance. Acrobats do somersaults and balancing acts, whilst dark eyed beauties ply their trade as henna artists creating an intricate work of art on a hand here, a shoulder there. When it all gets too much head towards the tall tower of the mosque where you will see lined up a row of horses and carriages, the perfect way to end the evening and travel in style back to your night’s sojourn.

Marrakech has mosques and palaces and exquisite gardens. History is celebrated around every corner. By all means plan an itinerary to fit it all in, or best of all just wander and explore what you find by accident.

Fes

Morocco’s fourth largest city previously capital, Fes has all the attractions of Marrakech and yet each has their own unique style.

One of the main draw cards for visitors to Fes is its leather tanneries. There is no sign post directing the way, no need, for your nose will lead the way. The best vantage point is from one of the many leather shops that surround the tanneries – oh yes, the Moroccans are astute and know a commercial opportunity when they see one. They will give you a fascinating spiel about the history of the tanneries, look on as you release your inner David Bailey and capture the expressions of the tannery workers going about their task in the ceaseless heat and then, just as you turn to go, you will be led on an impromptu tour of the leather shop and it’s factory workshop in the basement. Before you know it you are leaving with arms full of bags and belts and slippers and even a hand stitched camel for the neighbour’s kids back home. You’ve got to give it to them for ingenuity!

An amazing day trip from Fes is to visit the wonderful Roman ruins of Volubilis, an important Roman town with some of the best preserved ruins in Northern Africa. Travel by road or take a train to Meknes (1 hour) and a grand taxi up to the ruins. You can wander freely about the ruins. If you go at the right time of year, you will often see storks nesting on top of the huge ancient pillars.

Combine with a trip to the nearby Moulay Idriss, a little whitewashed town containing the tomb of the much revered Moulay Idris I, founder of Fes and a descendant of Muhammed.

Essaouira

Tap into your creative soul with a trip to this artistic coastal haven, much frequented by Moroccans themselves for their summer holidays. Essaouira is both a hip and hippy hangout, it has long been a well trodden path for those who enjoy freedom of expression and easy living. Jimi Hendrix did a stint here as did Cat Stevens and many other famous musicians and artists and film makers . There is even an ‘Orson Welles’ Square after Mr Welles filmed Othello in this little port city.

This is a place to stroll along the promenade, to spend inordinate numbers of hours in cafes sipping mint tea and people watching. Fresh fish is in abundance, the daily catch hauled onto the port side by the bucketful early morning. By mid-morning a large proportion of the fish finds its way onto a sizzling grill by the fish stalls, a stone’s throw from the port. If there’s one thing you absolutely MUST do in Essaouira it’s this, pick your fish from the many different varieties, agree a price and take a seat at the rustic wooden tables and benches and watch with delight as your fish is freshly grilled before your very eyes and served up with simple salads and breads. Heaven! You won’t find mouth-wateringly fresher fish anywhere.

Essaouira is a hive of activity, particularly along the long stretch of beach where you can organise camel rides, horse riding and quad biking among the dunes. It is also a wind surfing mecca due to the persistent driving winds. Watch children and adults alike flying kites of all shapes and sizes on the beach, or join in one of the many communal beach football games where anyone is a welcome addition to the team.

The first thing that strikes you about Essaouira is the lack of hassle. If you’ve travelled here from one of the larger cities, you will be pleasantly surprised by the gentle pace and the genuine attempts by locals to strike up a conversation without an ulterior motive. Even the beggars ask for 1 dirham instead of 20! The streets are laid out in a logical grid system which can catch you off guard when you’ve been used to labyrinthine alleyways of the likes of Marrakech!
Many bars, restaurants and riads have open air terraces from which to enjoy far reaching and spectacular views. The best are those overlooking the crashing waves beneath the ramparts of the medina.

Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are more accessible than many mountain ranges, with hikes suitable to all ranges of fitness. If you’re doing anything more than a day trek you will need a guide. Fear not, as there are a large number of official guides available for hire who will not only ensure that you don’t lose your way but they will often secure you somewhere to bed down for the night with a local Berber family, an experience not to be missed.

Sleeping

Over the last decade Morocco has entered the conscience of the hip and stylish ‘luxury’ traveller as well as remaining a backpacker fave. Fortunately there is accommodation to suit all and then some. Traditional riads (houses built around courtyards) have come into their own, being bought up in hordes by both locals and foreigners alike (in particular the French as French is spoken widely throughout Morocco) and painstakingly restored to their former glory. Many of these riads are so indulgent they appear to be straight off the cover of an upmarket interiors magazine, with sumptuous furnishings fit for royalty. Ok, some have a price tag to match too, but there are many in the mid range that are easy on the pocket and just as easy on the eye, filling that all too difficult gap between backpacker and A-lister.

Getting there and around

Only 3 hours flight from Europe and yet a world away in terms of experience and culture. Flying to Morocco is relatively simple with a choice of several international airports. Another popular way to enter this Northern tip of Africa is by ferry from Southern Spain, either as a foot passenger or by private vehicle, as the paperwork is not too daunting.

In fact bringing your own vehicle is an excellent way to travel around the country. Rental cars are available but can be quite pricy. If you’re cash rich and time poor then one or two internal flights will help you make the most of your trip. Alternatively, there is a very good bus and train network.

If you need to get from A to B locally, the petit taxis are excellent value and run on meters so you don’t have to spend time haggling. These types of taxis are only permitted to run within city boundaries however, so if you need a taxi to take you further afield you will have to negotiate a fixed price for one of the grand taxis (these are normally priced per seat and can be shared with other travellers if you can find anyone going your way).

Greece

Aah Greece! The birthplace of myths and legends, azure waters, blue domed Byzantine churches and olive groves in their hundreds! Admittedly most countries have a pearl or two to celebrate, but how many countries have ancient history and culture combined with a rich tapestry of legendary tales, as well as serving up the finest cuisine, indulging in a lifestyle of both hedonism and fine relaxation, acting as host to numerous natural wonders and nurturing over 200 inhabited islands, all of which hold their own appeal? Yes, Greece wears quite a dazzling string of pearls. It’s perhaps the grand lady of the Middle Eastern region (it is technically in Europe) and deserves as long as you can muster to be explored and appreciated.

Things to do in Greece

Due to the diversity of appeal, it is impossible to list all of the reasons to come to Greece without writing a book about it. To sample a few of its pleasures see below for some suggestions, but know that they are just the tip of the iceberg!

The island of Santorini

Unless you’ve been asleep for the past decade you can’t fail to have seen the heart stopping advertorial images of Santorini gracing bill boards, glossy magazines and travel shop windows. The rustic steep streets of white washed houses with window boxes overflowing with bright flowers, interspersed with blue domed churches and picturesque hotels carved into cliffsides, offering views of pristine Mediterranean waters. The images are arresting and have contributed to the increase in tourists to an island that is one of the jewels in Greece’s crown. The number of couples choosing Santorini as their wedding or honeymoon destination has also risen and is testament to the romanticism of the place – the Gods must have been smiling down on Santorini when it was created! It is said that Santorini sunsets are among the best in the world. It is no surprise that historically the name given to Santorini was Kalliste, meaning “the most beautiful one”.

The beauty of Santorini is enough of itself to warrant a visit. However, for those interested in more than aesthetic appeal, Santorini has a wealth of substance beneath its goddess like surface. Santorini is the remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, leading to the creation of a giant central lagoon, surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs. The result is spellbinding.

Visiting the site of the ancient Akrotini is a must and be amazed at the history of the place with a trip to the museum of prehistoric Thira. Follow up with a lazy afternoon on the black sands of Perissa.

However, be aware that the beauty of Santorini is no longer a secret and you’ll be sharing your romantic trip with a bevy of others all of whom had the same idea so if you had seclusion in mind you might want to consider looking elsewhere.

Athens

Athens is a bustling metropolis yet still set in ancient surrounds and with ruins peppered here there and everywhere.

Here, you’ll be treated to an endless string of outdoor cafes winding their way through ancient ruin strewn streets paying homage to an eclectic array of legends that evoke the kingdom of ancient gods and cautionary tales!

Immerse yourself in the bygone mystery of the Acropolis, topped by the supreme sacred temple Parthenon, possibly the world’s greatest archaeological site. Built by Pericles in the fifth century BC, the Parthenon was intended as a monument of the achievements of Athens’ inhabitants and it reigns supreme over Athens in its immense stature and historical importance. Unless a steep climb in the heat is your idea of fun, the best time to visit is late afternoon, out of the way of the crowds and the harsh sunlight.

If your first glimpse of Athens gives you a thirst for knowledge of how it all fits in, then you must make time for a visit to the astounding National Archaeological Museum. The museum contains a staggering number of ancient artefacts as well as providing a divine history of the creation and make up of ancient Greece.

Nearly 40% of Greek inhabitants actually live in Athens, including many of the wealthier well heeled local folk, which can lend a certain arrogant air to the place – definitely a place to see and be seen.

As well as being the granddaddy of Greece with its ancient ruins, Athens is also the spirited teenager, with its busy bars and clubs that welcome throngs of young people through the doors every night. Colourful and lively, Athens in the evening becomes a hive of activity and all are welcomed into its hedonistic arms. Fear not though if this is not your scene, there are plenty of places to escape the chaos!

Crete

The length and breadth of Crete packs more in than any of the other Greek islands. Party paradise? Check. Historical remains? Check. Sweet smelling orange trees? Check. Stunning mountain roads? Check. Idyllic beaches? Check. Dramatic gorges? Check. Crete is heaven on earth and so it should be given it was allegedly the birthplace of Zeus.

For the culturally astute, initiate yourself with delightfully frescoed Minoan palaces, close your eyes and imagine ancient civilizations – Crete is yet another Grecian paradise where history reigns. In fact recent archaeologists have discovered that the earliest civilization in Europe flourished in Crete. With a world class museum and a spattering of roman and other ruins, Crete has a remarkably rich history to digest.

However, like Athens, Crete also embraces the new, the lively and everything in between. A haven for beach goers, including nudists, as well as retail therapy – the island could well be a country all of its own accord for what it offers, which is why tourists flock there in the peak seasons and if you want to explore Crete away from the madding crowds you’d be just as well to avoid the school holidays and the package tour hot spots of which there are many.

Dodecanese Islands

The problem with Greece is that nearly all of the islands are what dreams are made of and the Dodecanese islands are no exception. It starts to sound a bit repetitive when you talk of the azure waters and soft sand and romantic crumbling ruins, the sweet smelling citrus groves and scented flowers, the white washed walls and fig trees, but yes there is all this and more to look forward to. Relaxation, exploration and island hopping is what this region does best, thrown in with the warm and friendly smiles of the locals.

Some of the smaller Dodecanese islands like Patmos are all about tasting a real slice of Greece as it used to be. No big resorts here, just a beautiful laid back landscape of local bays and beaches.

Island hopping

A fabulous and adventurous way to see Greece is to charter a boat and go island hopping! This really is the best way to get an overall view of the different facets of a country with such charm, character and varied landscape and attractions. Over 200 of the islands are inhabited, many with a population of less than 100. There is no better way to find your own private slice of heaven. Drop the anchor in gorgeous bays, eat freshly caught fish for lunch and then hire a motorcycle to explore the rugged interior of the islands. It’s not hard to see why so many have fallen for the charm and gone on to make boat charters around the Greek islands their way of life.

Whether you are in the market for a sleepy, peaceful haven or a throng of busy beach bars and clubs, from romantic ruins to a strong dash of ouzo, Greece has it covered.

Getting there and around

Flying into Greece from other European cities is cheap and easy and is by far the most convenient way to begin your trip. Another alternative is to travel overland across one of the borders. However, a fun way to arrive is by ferry boat to Trieste, Corfu, Igoumenitsa or Kefallonia.

Once there, use the extensive bus system or take the train from place to place. Or do as thousands do every summer – charter a boat and begin an island hopping adventure.
